You can’t change physics! The success of the LANAP protocol is rooted in laser physics and the unique interaction between the tissue in the mouth and the variable pulsed wavelength of the PerioLase MVP-7 1064 Nd:YAG dental laser.
The 1064 wavelength passes through water and hydroxyapatite; but is absorbed in melanin and hemoglobin. Simply put – the wavelength targets the diseased tissue without harming healthy tissue. The laser light penetrates 4mm beyond the tissue surface to effectively kill bacteria. Once the site is clean, the laser interacts with the hemoglobin to create a stable coagulation zone, minimizing bleeding and promoting faster healing.
A. Perio probe indicates excessive pocket depth
B. Laser radiation vaporizes bacteria, diseased tissue, pathologic proteins, and alerts the practitioner to the presence of tartar
C. Ultrasonic scaler and special hand instruments are used to remove root surface accretions
D. Bone is modified at time of surgery
E. Laser is used to form a gel-clot containing stem cells from bone and PDL
F. Reattachment of reté ridges to clean root surface, with a stable fibrin clot at the gingival crest to create a ‘closed system’
G. Occlusal trauma adjusted
H. New attachment is regenerated
Proven with Human Histology
Laser Full Mouth Disinfection
Laser pocket disinfection kills the bacteria, which can cause gum disease, hiding in the gum pockets and surrounding gum tissue. Laser pocket disinfection is used in conjunction with dental cleanings and periodontal maintenance to slow the progression of gum disease and inflammation.
Laser pocket disinfection aids in the treatment of bad breath or halitosis which are both caused by bacteria.

LANAP - Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure
Until recently, the only options for treating periodontal disease have been invasive. Effective treatment - osseus surgery, a 70 year old technique - involves cutting away infected gum tissue, drilling into bone, removing teeth, and applying stitches for closure of the gum area. Traditional gum surgery comes with side effects, which include gum line recession and tooth sensitivity. Advances in dental technology have provided a less invasive and more thorough alternative using the PerioLase MVP Laser and the LANAP Protocol.
LANAP is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional gum surgery which requires no cutting or stitching. LANAP is a regenerative technique which helps regrow and rejuvenate the gum tissue, rather than cutting it away. LANAP treats gum disease without the pain, gum line recession and increased sensitivity traditionally associated with periodontal treatments.
Why is LANAP Making the Difference?
TRUE REGENERATIONTreating periodontal or gum disease is very challenging. Success is determined by the treatment’s ability to minimize inflammation, decrease periodontal pocket depth and slow down or stop attachment loss.
If gum surgery is needed we recommend laser gum surgery over traditional methods. NdYAG laser allows for better healing, and better patient comfort and it promotes better bone health. Stimulating the bone with the NdYAG laser encourages the regrowth of bone lost to periodontal disease. This allows us to save teeth that have become loose, avoiding the need for extraction and subsequent procedures to replace the missing tooth. Treatment with LANAP® improves the health of your teeth and entire smile.
TRADITIONAL OSSEOUS SURGERYIn traditional gum or osseous surgery we use a scalpel to cut the gums and then fold or "flap” them back to expose roots to gain access and view the bone supporting the teeth. Damaged bone is then reshaped and grafted with graft material. The gums are also cut away to reduce the periodontal pocket to ideal 3 mm depth. The gums are then closed with sutures to allow for healing.
LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPYIn LASER therapy using the LANAP protocol the PerioLase MVP-7 is used instead of a scalpel and only a certified clinician may perform this procedure. The laser fiber is inserted between the tooth and gum, without cutting any gum tissue. Using specific settings the laser light energy targets only the source of inflammation without affecting any healthy gum tissue. No gum tissue is removed. NO scalpel and no sutures are used and there is no pain after surgery.

Enhancing Healing & Swelling Reduction four times faster.
We offer laser biostimulation to patients who are seeking minimally invasive treatment for reducing pain and swelling. Biostimulation is a low-intensity treatment which focuses laser energy on affected areas to reduce pain and accelerate the healing process. It is commonly used as a follow up for other treatments to speed recovery times, and can be used in the following applications:
● Treatment of paresthesia or nerve damage● Pain reduction for sore tissue areas● Inflammation and swelling reduction of the gum and surrounding areas● Management of pain associated with orthodontics (braces)● Pain relief during post-operative periods● Reduction in symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMJ) or jaw pain● General pain management● Skin rejuvenation
At Preserve Your Teeth®, we offer laser biostimulation to patients who are seeking a solution for the management of oral pain and discomfort. Please contact us for a consultation to determine if this procedure is right for you.
